Shirley and Peter Bonner have committed to climb Mt Kilimanjaro because of their personal experience in dealing with a brain disorder and their understanding just how significantly it can affect your life and those around you. About two years ago Shirley was diagnosed with MCI (mild cognitive impairment) which has been characterized by the loss of some aspects of her brain’s functionality. “Through the process of diagnosis and treatment we have had personal exposure to the Alzheimer’s Clinic at UBC and the Alzheimer’s Society of BC and have come to appreciate what valuable support they provide the individuals and the families of those people who have the misfortune of having to deal with some form of brain disorder.” Having heard of the Ascent for Alzheimer’s, it was a natural opportunity to support the ASBC through climbing the highest peak in Africa, while experiencing the personal reward of undertaking such a challenge. Shirley has been an avid hiker and outdoors person all of her life and has twice climbed to high altitude in the Himalayas, even getting Peter to join her on one of the expeditions. She is confident in completing their quest for the summit of Kilimanjaro, even knowing how tough it will be. “We hope that our efforts will contribute to both the continued pursuit of a cure and the continuation of the support provided by the Alzheimer’s Society of BC to those who are now dealing with the reality of this debilitating disease.”
Deb and Jim Yeates have made the commitment to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa to support their good friends Shirley and Peter Bonner. As you know, about two years ago Shirley was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment which has been characterized by the loss of some aspects of her brain’s functionality. Shirley & Peter have been friends of the Yeates for the last 20 years. This opportunity to climb Kilimanjaro with them will be quite an adventure for the Yeates who have had significantly less hiking experience. They will be relying on Shirley to lead them to the 19,400 foot top of the mountain. They look forward to the challenge of this climb and supporting Shirley and Peter while contributing to the Alzheimer Society of BC through our and your donations. These donations will help the continued research for a cure for this disease. Thank you for your help – it is needed!
